Speaking of spectacular, headlining this year’s festival will be global Australian success story EMPIRE OF THE SUN whose smash hit debut album, featuring the singles ‘Standing on The Shore’, ‘We Are The People’ and ‘Walking On A Dream,’ saw the band trip the light fantastic on the international arena throughout 2009. This electro-glam powerhouse, which features the magical vocals of Luke Steele - the mastermind behind Sleepy Jackson - have yet to debut their highly anticipated live show. Frontman and vocalist Steele reveals “The show is going to be epic, full of colours, dinosaur-teeth chomping at the valleys of future. It will be more outrageous than the scents of imagination and will take the audience on a journey to another world.”. Miss this one at your own peril!

It has been another huge year for THE CAT EMPIRE, with the international release of their album Live On Earth taking them on tour to all the great cities of the world yet again with their musical mayhem. The Cat Empire have decided to spend the New Year period a little closer to home this year, while they start work on a new album set for 2010 release. Who says Cats don’t like water?  These very cool cats have been dying to get back to Pyramid Rock Festival since their last epic performance there in 2007. Their unmistakable fusion of jazz, hip hop, swing, reggae, ska and much, much more will have the Pyramid party pumping.

After a decade and a half on the US hip-hop scene, riotous group UGLY DUCKING return to Pyramidfor the second time, featuring MCs Dizzy Dustin and Andy Cooper, and Young Einstein with his famous dookie gold chain,have mastered the art of getting audiences jumping and singing along to their infamous combination of rhythm, rhyme and humour.  It’s an exciting year for the trio with their new album Audacity out earlier this year. Expect to take part in some of hell crazy stage antics when they take over the Pyramid stage this year!

Brisbane hard rockers THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT have earned Australia’s respect through blood sweat, and tears. The band’s bold, defining and epic new album Final Conversation Of Kings has been greeted with sold out shows across the country. See why The Butterfly Effect have a diehard following when they kick serious arse at Pyramid ’09.

Melbourne’s ultimate darlings of uber-pop ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI have had a really busy year supporting The Presets on a sold out national tour, playing Sound Relief in front of 35,000 people at the SCG, and working on their forthcoming album Vision Revision which will be released in 2010. The band promise an army of fresh new tunes for Pyramid Rock Festival.

Sydney pop rockers FAKER have just finished supporting Pink on her mammoth, record-breaking Australian tour. After the success of albums Addicted Romantic and Be The Twilight, which features their brilliant single ‘This Heart Attack‘, Faker are currently working on album number three. If we’re lucky they’ll preview some of their new songs at Pyramid ’09!

THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS have been wowing festival audiences for years with an eclectic harmony of rock, reggae, pop and folk that has drawn comparisons with Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, and Mason Jennings. Currently working on a new album, The Beautiful Girls will be testing out some new tunes as well as grooving to sweet delights from previous albums like Ziggurats and Learn Yourself.

With two killer studio albums under their belt, US based LCD SOUNDSYSTEM, is the musical side project of producer James Murphy, co-founder of the notorious dance-punk label DFA Records. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM is coming to Phillip Island in DJ mode to get the party started and will bring an impossibly brilliant mix of dance, punk and disco with them to Pyramid’s Pharaohs Annex! Groove is in the house!!

Having shared the global stage with the likes of Santana, Damien ‘Jr gong’ Marley, Julian Marley, The John Butler Trio and Michael Franti & Spearhead to name a few, the 8-piece powerhouse that is BLUE KING BROWN bring their cross generational grooves and socially conscious sound to Pyramid Rock Festival 2009. Lead singer, guitarist and percussionist Natalie Pa'apa'a will win hearts with her infectious energy and passion.

The new world of THE DRONES is an exotic place, one populated by dark corners, rarely explored avenues, sparse canvases and dense, exhilarating peaks and troughs. The infamous Australian rock band’s live show has left slack jaws, ringing ears and wagging tongues in their wake. See their dark, dangerous and exhilarating stage show for yourself when The Drones take on the Pyramid Rock Festival for the first time.

Beholders of the ancient key that unlocks the gateway to good old-fashioned high times, Perth’s brightest young exports TAME IMPALA will trip the light fantastic when they bring their psychedelic rock to the Pyramid Rock Festival this year!

Essexbuzz band BADDIES are set to release their hotly anticipated debut album Do The Job in Australia this October. With a live show which switches between twisted pop sensibilities that scream Talking Heads and a bass-driven heft that takes more than a little from Queens of the Stone Age, see what the fuss is about when Baddies make their Aussie debut and tear up the stage at Pyramid’09!

Sydneysiders VAN SHE have cut their musical teeth supporting Australian heavyweights such
 as The Presets, End Of Fashion and Faker, while their debut album V saw the band working in London with noted producer Jim Abbiss who has collaborated with illustrious acts such as the Artic Monkeys, Ladytron & Kasabian. Be sure to catch Van She when they hit Pyramid with their own brand of synthesised moon rock!

UK alternative rockers THE BOXER REBELLION return with new album Union set for physical release in Australia this September, four years after their stunning 2005 debut Exits. They’ve spent this year on headline and festival tours across the UK, Europe, and the US, where their Los Angeles and New York debut performances sold out in a matter of days. The Boxer Rebellion will bring their life-altering rock to Pyramid ’09.

Local indie dance heroes GRAFTON PRIMARY will turn the green grasses of Pyramid into a dazzling dancefloor. This electro-noir trio has consistently defied expectations, whether it be with their anthemic original tracks from debut album Eon or remixes for the likes of Faker and Jackson Jackson. Playing to rapturous packed houses has become the norm for the band; see Grafton Primary ignite the stage at Pyramid Rock Festival!

Hopefully Sydney party animals BLUEJUICE won’t be nursing broken legs at Pyramid when they storm the stage with their aggressive mix of pop, rock, hip hop, electro and disco. This lovely bunch of misfits have some brand spankin’ new tracks from their second album Head Of The Hawk to show off. Party time!!!

Central Coast pop punksPyramid veterans SOMETHING WITH NUMBERS return in 2009 on the back of their new single ‘89 Freedom St’a hook laden Oz rock classic which is the follow-up to the airplay hits ‘We’ll Fight’ and ‘Stay With Me Bright Eyes’ from their second album Engineering The Soul. Be there when Something With Numbers rock Pyramid once more!

Australians BUMBLEBEEZ are an eccentric brother/sister sucker punch unlike any other. No messin’. Though they’ve been fittingly described as “musical coleslaw,” this delicious description is somewhat of an understatement once their back catalogue and erratic brilliance live has been experienced at Pyramid ’09.

Spiderbait’s co-vocalist and percussive lynchpin KRAM debuted his debut solo album Mix Tape at the Meredith Music Festival in December 2008, and has gone on to add Splendour In The Grass and Homebake to his growing festival repertoire. The Pyramid Rock Festival is happy to be the cherry on top of his merry 2009 festival sundae.

Brisbane’s alternative rock breakthroughs DEAD LETTER CIRCUS will thrill Pyramid audiences with their soaring sing-a-long choruses, chiming atmospherics and delay soaked tones. Having shared stages with the likes of Cog, Karnivool, Chevelle and The Butterfly Effect, these guys are no strangers to epic live shows! Get ready Pyramid party peeps, Dead Letter Circus come armed with heavy-hitting new single ‘The Space On The Wall’!

Pyramid is excited to bring you Baltimore experimental pop band PONYTAIL and their delicious new album Ice Cream Spiritual. Mm mm! A Ponytail show is full contact aerobics, it’s a hedonistic whirlwind for your ears and body. It is the exorcism your stiff loins have been waiting for!

New York’s experimental pop girl duo TELEPATHE will stir up the hearts, minds and laptops of Australians in 2009. Produced by Dave Sitek of TV On The Radio, the girls’ musical explorations of pop, hip hop, shoegaze, electronic and psychedelia on their debut album Dance Mother will sweep over Pyramid this New Year.

John MacLean, better known by his stage name THE JUAN MACLEAN, is an American electronic musician. Once guitarist for the indie dance-punk band Six Finger Satellite with James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem head honcho, DFA Records founder and Pyramid ’09 buddy), The Juan MacLean brings his experimental modern electronica into the Pyramid mix this year!

Melbourne hip hop artist PHRASE is back with a brand new album that is already turning heads and impacting the Australian music industry. To create his new sound Phrase has enlisted the help of producer Jan Skubiszewski (or Aria nominated Jackson Jackson fame) on his triple j featured and critically acclaimed new album Clock Work. See Phrase wax lyrical at Pyramid this New Year!

THE FUMES exploded onto the Aussie rock scene with their critically-acclaimed debut album Guns Of Gold in 2006. The band’s second album Sundancer, produced by Detroit-based garage-auteur Jim Diamond (The White Stripes), sees them hone their dirty blues-rock aesthetic, smokin’ grooves and classic ‘70s-style gritty rock, but capture the ferocious, stripped-down aural assault they deliver live. Prepare to get down and dirty at Pyramid with The Fumes!

ASTRONOMY CLASS is a trio made up of producers Chasm, Sir Robbo and one of Australia’s most revered MCs Ozi Batla, whose other band The Herd is pioneering the new skool hip hop act, four albums deep selling tens of thousands of albums as well as sell out concerts. Astronomy Class move deeper into hip hop territory with their new album Pursuit of Happiness at Pyramid ’09!

In amongst the madness and fervour that has been the last 18 months of their lives, Melbournian four-piece SKIPPING GIRL VINEGAR have become one of the most talked about bands in Australia today. Witness the brilliant brother/sister duo of Mark and Sare Lang and their two childhood friends when Skipping Girl Vinegar grace Pyramid’s stage for the first time.

It’s been quite a year for the three members of WE HAVE BAND. Having only played their debut gig a year ago, the electro trio are now regarded as one of the most exciting bands coming out of London-town. Put on your dancing shoes when We Have Band make their way to Australia for the first time to play Pyramid!

Sydney’s CASSETTE KIDS come to the Pyramid fold bearing fresh from supporting Lily Allen, The Presets, the Ting Tings and Grafton Primary. They’ll come to Pyramid Rock Festival armed with songs from their forthcoming debut album. Exciting times!

Hailing from New Zealand, now Melbourne-based five piece BONJAH return to Pyramid for another year to get audiences movin’ and groovin’ in the sun to their folk, funk and roots sound.

Equally at home playing traditional rock venues, mainstream music festivals, dance clubs or massive underground rave parties; MM9 is a band whose versatility is matched only by the sheer potency of their stage presence. See the band rock Pyramid 2009!

Sydney foursome REGULAR JOHN’s debut album The Peaceful Atom Is A Bomb, which Rolling Stone magazinehas already dubbed “the perfect distillation of everything good that’s happened since rock found a heavy, fuzzy imagination in the late Sixties,” is the culmination of two intense years of hard living, hard partying and – more than anything – fucking hard work. They round up Pyramid first round of acts for 2009!

There you have it folks, the first line up for the Pyramid Rock Festival in 2009. We’ve worked hard to put together a uniquely diverse lineup that will cater to everyone’s tastes and open minds to new, great and hopefully mind-blowing New Years experiences.

Featuring three spectacular days of music, sea, surf and on-site camping for thousands of Australia’s music lovers, in 2009 Pyramid Rock Festival will continue to offer early-bird camping tickets for primo camping possies, ample shower and toilet facilities, a wide variety of market stalls, an international food village that will cater to every taste and the ever-popular shuttle bus services to local surf beaches.
